A two-week, hands-on preservation trades workshop, Timber Framing for Historic Buildings, will be presented March 29-April 9 by Maysville Community and Technical College (MCTC) in cooperation with Old Washington Inc., the Mason County Historical Society and the Kentucky Heritage Council / State Historic Preservation Office.

The course is geared to provide additional skills training for experienced contractors seeking expertise in timber framing techniques appropriate to historic structures. Topics will include analysis and remedies for structural repairs to timber-framed structures, the use of appropriate hand tools, an introduction to historic joinery and a discussion of safe work practices.

Participants will:

-- Experience a combination of shop instruction and fieldwork on a circa 1790-1810 timber-framed building located in Maysville.

-- Learn how to bring projects into compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Rehabilitation.

-- Improve their company's ability to market to clients with state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credit projects, working in historic districts and on historic homes.

The instructor is Rudy Christian, executive director of the nationwide non-profit Preservation Trades Network, who has more than 25 years of experience in timber framing techniques.

Classes will take place 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. The fee is $500 and limited scholarships are available for local contractors. Class size is limited to 10.
