Third Thursday Thing to Discuss Aquaculture Program

Kentucky State University will hold its Third Thursday Thing Program, a monthly sustainable agriculture workshop targeting small farmers, beginning farmers and agricultural professionals, Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program will be held at the Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm, Center for the Sustainability of Farms and Families, 1525 Mills Lane Frankfort, and discuss Kentucky aquaculture.

Dr. Marion Simon, State Specialist, Small Farm and Part-time Farmers in the College of Agriculture, Food Science, and Sustainable Systems will welcome attendees. The day's program will feature KSU staff speaking about:

- Marine Shrimp Production at KSU by Dr. Andrew Ray

- Effects of LED Lighting on Pacific White Shrimp Performance and Water Quality in Intensive Aquaculture Systems by Leo Fleckenstein

- Involving Limited Resource Farmers in Aquaculture by Dr. Sid Dasgupta

- Systems to Hold Live Food Fish for Market by Dr. Ken Semmens

- Evaluation of Black Solider Fly Hermetia illucens Larvae as a Fish Meal Replacement in Practical Diets for Largemouth Bass by Chelsea Walling

- Pond Management by Forrest Wynne

- Aquatic Weed Control by Dr. Bob Durborow

- Fish Diseases by Kat Mitchell

- Aquaponics, including a demonstration, by Janelle Hager

Directions to the farm: From I-64 Exit 53, take US-127 south toward Lawrenceburg, at the 4th stoplight, turn left onto Mills Lane, the Kentucky State University Research Farm is 1 1/2 miles on the right.
