Largest Pumpkin, Largest Watermelon Winners Named

Maxwell Daley, a 12-year-old Grayson County Kentucky pumpkin grower won first place in the seventh annual Largest Pumpkin Contest. His pumpkin weighed in at 582.5 pounds during the Kentucky State Fair official weigh-in on the West Hall porch. Daley is a man of few words but revealed the secret to growing large pumpkins is a lot of fertilizer.

Frank Mudd from Flaherty, Kentucky won the Largest Watermelon Contest for the third year in a row with his 137-pound melon. Mudd is also the official judge for the Largest Pumpkin Contest and a former pumpkin winner.

The pumpkins and watermelons will be moved to the West Hall for the remainder of the Fair for viewing. The contest is the largest premium of any Kentucky State Fair entry category. The largest pumpkin winner received $500 and the largest watermelon winner received $100. The top four are awarded prize money.
