59th Annual Farm-City Field Day July 6 at Thornton Farm
Kentucky Ag Connection - 06/29/2017

For 59 years, Farm-City Field Day has brought city and country folk together on a Franklin County farm for a morning filled with educational tours, exhibits and a tasty picnic lunch. This year, the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service event will take place July 6 at the Steve Thornton family farm, 5932 Mt. Zion Road on the west side of the county.

Educational tours will begin at 9 a.m. EDT and continue until lunchtime. The last full tour will leave at 11 a.m. Tours will cover such topics as vegetable diseases, invasive species, vulture management, forage production, and hay storage and feeding.

The tours will end up at the booth and display area. Participants can look forward to a hearty lunch, including a rib-eye sandwich, provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4075 and other donations. Franklin County Cattlemen's Association members will man the grills.

The Steve Thornton farm is located 5.8 miles from the BP Station off Devils Hollow Road and West Frankfort Plaza Connector. Signs will direct traffic into the farm from Devils Hollow Road.

Farm-City Field Day is a waste-free event presented by UK Cooperative Extension, the Frankfort/Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, the Franklin County Conservation District and Franklin County Farm Bureau. It is made possible by the help of 125 volunteers and more than 30 groups and business that donate money or services. Free tickets are available at the Franklin County Farm Bureau office and the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce.

The UK Cooperative Extension Service is part of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. With its land-grant partner, Kentucky State University, Cooperative Extension takes the university to the people in their local communities, addressing issues of importance of all Kentuckians.
