Kentucky Ag Connection - 05/21/2018

Murray State University recently announced a new Master of Science in Economic Development program to prepare students through classroom and practical training to work in the field of local and regional economic development.

"We are excited about this new degree offering and the potential it has to be a game-changer for many communities throughout the region," said Dr. Tim Todd, dean of the Arthur J. Bauernfeind College of Business at Murray State.

Dr. David Eaton, chair for the department of economics and finance in the business college, added, "This degree provides another career path for those interested not only in economics but also in other fields that support the creation of jobs and wealth."

The Master of Science in Economic Development program at Murray State can be completed on the University's main campus or in an online format. The degree is open to both full- and part-time students with full-time students eligible to complete the program in three semesters and one summer. Students will be trained using the Geographic Information System (GIS) as well as other statistical and economic methods to inform economic development decisions. Additionally, directed study courses allow students to complete advanced work in topic areas of their choice, while the capstone project allows students to prepare and present a significant independent project in an area of their interest or job responsibilities. Possible career options for students with this master's degree include executive director of an economic development corporation, city planner, state planner, employee at a federal government economic development agency, community planner and corporate strategist.
