UK to Host S.H. Phillips No-Till Lecture Nov. 17
Kentucky Ag Connection - 11/15/2017

The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment will host the 2017 S. H. Phillips No-till Lecture at 2 p.m. Nov. 17 in the Cameron Williams Lecture Hall inside the UK Plant Science Building.

The late Shirley Phillips, UK agronomist, was one of the fathers of no-till agriculture, a practice farmers worldwide use to conserve soil and water. An elite group of researchers and agriculturalists involved with no-till agriculture have had the privilege to speak at the lecture over the years.

This year's featured speaker is Eileen Kladivko, an agronomy professor at Purdue University. "Cover Crops, Soil Health and No-till: Challenges and Opportunities" is the title of her presentation.

Kladivko teaches and researches soil physics, soil biology and soil management. Her research focuses on identifying soil management systems that improve environmental quality and promote agricultural sustainability. More specifically, her research has included the impacts of tile drainage on crop yields and nitrate losses to surface waters; the interactions of earthworms, soil management and soil physical properties; conservation tillage and cover crops for soil quality improvement and preferential flow of chemicals through soils.

Kladivko is a co-founder and executive committee member of the Midwest Cover Crop Council and is also on the leadership team for the Indiana Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative.
